Should You Check Your Bags or Carry On?

As you begin to travel more frequently, you’ll run into one of the most asked questions of travel, “Should I check a bag or carry on?”

Depending on the trip you have planned, there are benefits to each.

When Should You Check a Bag?

  • If you’re taking a long trip (10+ days)

If you’re creative with your space and outfits, you can often fit up to 10 days worth of clothing in a carry-on bag. However, if you’re traveling for weeks or months at a time, you may require space for outfit variety, additional pairs of shoes, or seasonal clothing. In this case, we recommend opting for a checked bag.

  • If you won’t have access to laundry

If you won’t have access to laundry facilities at your destination, then you may need more clothes to last you for a short period, especially if your destination is in a hot and humid climate.

  • If you’re not on a budget

Unless you’re flying a certain airline (e.g., Southwest), you’ll likely need to pay a fee to check your bag. If you’d rather have the items you want/need than worry about paying an additional $25-$50, then a checked bag it is!

  • If you need items that you simply can’t fit in a carry-on

Certain types of trips require certain supplies and items. For example, if you’re going on a hiking trip or attending a wedding, you may not be able to fit everything you need for those events in a carry-on bag.

When Should You Carry On?

  • If you’re going for a short trip

If you’re headed out on a weekend trip or even a week-long jaunt, then a carry-on bag will work just fine! Using packing cubes or rolling your clothes is often a great way to efficiently use your space and fit everything you need.

  • If you’re on a budget

Was the plane ticket expensive? Are you already crunching the numbers about how you’ll be able to afford this trip? Don’t check a bag and save on the baggage fee!

  • If you can’t afford to lose your luggage

Carrying on your bag is one of the best ways to ensure that it will never be lost in transit. Plus, you’ll save time in the airport itself by not having to wait at the airport counter or going to baggage claim!

  • If you’ll have access to laundry

If you know you’ll be able to wash items when you arrive at your destination, don’t worry about bringing every pair of socks or t-shirts to last you for the rest of the year. You can always wash and re-wear whatever you pack in your carry-on.
